Sand in depletion. This is the alarm for builders that is bursting even in real estate. One of the basic elements for the real estate sector, but also construction, seems to be at risk of exhaustion. And in all this, the fundamental problem is unique: to find a valid alternative to avoid that both sectors mentioned above, can live deadlock.
To try to analyze the problem and, in addition, to find a solution, we decided to create a mini guide dedicated to the topic. So , if you are curious to know more , we can start !
Did you know that sand is the second most consumed natural resource in the world? Next only to water, every day, in the world, about 18 kilos of sand are extracted for each inhabitant. Too little for what we actually need in real estate and construction. The key raw material in construction is therefore at risk. So what can we do to avoid a further reduction in the amount of sand ?
What makes us think of the most immediate solution in the first place is the use of desert sand. Unfortunately, the answer we are about to give you is quite disappointing. The use of this type of sand is not adequate and the grains of the desert are not compatible with the needs of the sector. Too smooth and rounded. Concrete instead, in order to be stable, must be composed of at least four millimeters per grain.
So what would be the best solution to remedy this situation? In theory, the problem lies in the fact that the sand currently used is located on the banks of rivers or near water sources. But since 2000, the quantity required has tripled across the globe.
But the link between the use of sand and real estate is not only related to the need to build. Unfortunately or fortunately, in recent years, due to the urbanization process, most of the population has concentrated in cities. That is why , there has been a significant increase on the demand side. The main link is the cost of real estate. The scarcity of raw materials has a significant impact on the final cost of the property itself.
Among the various groups of researchers, who devote their studies in the sector, the realization of new types of cement is being considered. For example, those based on recycled plastic or rice husks. At the moment, however, no really valid alternatives have yet been found that would allow the total replacement of sand, which is now running out.
What can I say, it is hoped that science can make significant progress, surprising us with new innovations to improve our sector too!
