Sustainable Chicago

The first steps

Chicago has also decided to embark on a sustainable path. That’s why we want to tell you about it in our column today. In fact, the city of Chicago has emerged on the international scene thanks to a recent initiative. Involving both real estate and design. So we’ll be talking about the construction of a 100% sustainable building using prefabricated pieces and eco-sustainable design furniture. In short, the realisation of so-called “ecodesign“.
So, if you are ready and looking forward to learning more, we can start! Let’s take a trip to the wonderful and sustainable Chicago!

Sustainable Chicago

The area

Before we get into the heart of our guide, let’s try to understand the area. Where did eco-friendly construction take off? The area that has established Chicago as a sustainable city is Ukrainian Village. For those who have never been to Chicago, this neighbourhood is undoubtedly one of the oldest in the city. This is where our green apartment building is located. Precisely on W Rice Street. The name of this area leaves no doubt. In fact, it takes its name from the Ukrainian immigrants who settled in this area towards the end of the 19th century. It is not surprising, in fact, that it is still possible today to feel this influence at a cultural and associative level. But let’s get to our flats that are driving the web crazy.

Sustainable Chicago

What is the building that is so amazing that it has left everyone stunned? It is the project by Vladimir Radutny Architects. The aim is to create passive and active structures that can maintain a very high level of energy efficiency. In detail, the structure is based on eight flats configured as follows:

  • 4 single-storey dulplex configurations.
  • Large outdoor and green spaces
  • Strategic location that guarantees constant and above all natural lighting. Significantly reducing costs.
  • The building is clad in corrugated sheet metal to give it a modern yet artistic style. In addition, the large perforated windows allow a continuum with the outside environment.

In general, it is clear that the studio’s initial objective is now twofold. That of making as little impact as possible but at the same time trying to modernise an old, dated context. This strategic action is an example of how an area can be remodelled without acting in a way that is impactful and harmful to the environment. Moreover, all the materials used in the construction phase and for the interior design are 100% sustainable. A successful project, which allowed the studio to receive the AIA Chicago 2019 award for excellence in design.

This news allows us to understand the importance of the interconnection between the past and the present. The need for change should not override the tradition and culture of the place. On the contrary. It is essential to facilitate and rehabilitate it also through these building works of territorial and urban development.
We look forward to receiving further news on this subject and invite you to stay updated. But not only on this topic. But on the entire world panorama, which is constantly changing every day. Always here on Realigro!
